The new BMW 760Li
BMW's new flagship model will launch in September 2009 and feature two world debuts. The BMW 760Li will be powered by an all new 5,972cc twin-turbocharged V12 engine and be the first BMW production car to feature the marque's new eight-speed automatic transmission, offering outstanding levels of performance and refinement in the premium segment.
At its heart, the new all-aluminium V12 engine produces 544hp at 5,250rpm and 750Nm of torque from just 1,500rpm through to 5,000rpm, delivering over 100hp and 150Nm of torque more than the previous model. This equates to a zero to 62mph time of 4.6 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph - a performance which eclipses many sports cars, yet is delivered with effortless tranquillity.
Helping to transfer such prodigious performance to the road is a new eight-speed automatic transmission offering effortless in-gear performance. The unique eight speed configuration is achieved without gaining in size or weight over the former traditional six-speed transmission. This innovative arrangement, incorporating four simple gearsets and five gear change elements, ensures that only two clutches are open in each gear at any one time, significantly reducing frictional losses.
As befits the flagship of the range, the latest BMW 760Li boasts an array of technologies aimed at balancing supreme ride comfort with a dynamic driving experience. Drive Dynamic Control, featuring Variable Damping Control, comes as standard allowing the driver to customise the driving characteristics of the car. At the touch of a button the driver can alter the gear change, throttle response, degree of power steering assistance, damper settings and the Dynamic Stability Control+ programme. Enhancing this is self-levelling air suspension, on the rear axle, which ensures a cosseting ride for the rear passengers.
Offering the most rear space in the luxury saloon class, the new BMW 760Li gains an additional 14cms of legroom for rear seat passengers over a standard wheelbase BMW 7 Series. The interior is aimed at cocooning occupants in a luxurious, exclusive environment. Stainless-steel door entry trims, with an illuminated V12 cover, welcome driver and passengers. The instrument panel is finished in nappa leather, the roof lining and sun visors in alcantara, and the exclusive burr walnut interior trim with individual inlays, all serve to distinguish the new flagship model from other BMW 7 Series variants.
Individually heated and multi-adjustable Comfort Seats for both front and rear seat passengers are standard offerings. These can be complemented by optional air-conditioned seats that can also be fitted, in the rear, with a massaging capability. BMW's Professional Multimedia navigation system with 12 gigabyte hard drive, Speed Limit Display, Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Soft Close doors and an electrically-powered sunblind for the rear window all feature as standard.
A number of innovative optional features further enhance driving dynamics, refinement and safety. Integral Active Steering allows all four wheels of the car to be steered, which not only improves the turning circle at slower speeds but also allows a more composed ride at higher speeds. Lane Change Warning can also be specified along with BMW's Night Vision system with individual pedestrian recognition. Side View cameras and Head-up Display are two further safety features that are available.
The new BMW 760Li will go on sale in September 2009. Prices will be announced at a later date.
